How do I apply dongle updates?¶
This article provides step-by-step instructions on how to apply a dongle update (V2C — “Vendor to Customer”) that has been sent to you by ADAM Technology using two different methods: The ADAM Licence Editor, and Sentinel’s Admin Control Center.
Method 1: Using ADAM Licence Editor¶
The ADAM Licence Editor is the easier option if you already have the software installed, because it is included as part of the installation. It can also be downloaded from our website.
Save the attached v2c file somewhere convenient.
Ensure the ADAM Technology dongle you wish to update is plugged in to a USB port. The dongle ID engraved on the side of the USB connector should match the first three digits of the v2c file you wish to apply.
Run ADAM License Editor.

Click on “Apply License File” tab on the top right corner, then click on the “…” button on the bottom right corner to browse to the .v2c file you saved in Step 1.
Click on “Apply Update” on the bottom left corner. That will apply the dongle update.
If anything goes wrong, see the Possible Errors section below.
Method 2: Using Admin Control Center¶
If you don’t have ADAM Licence Editor installed (e.g. because you have a network dongle plugged in to a network server that does not have ADAM’s software installed) then you can still update the dongle using the Admin Control Center that is automatically available on any computer that has the Sentinel dongle driver installed.
Save the attached v2c file somewhere convenient.
Ensure the ADAM Technology dongle you wish to update is plugged in to a USB port. The dongle ID engraved on the side of the USB connector should match the first three digits of the v2c file you wish to apply.
Browse to the Update/Attach page in the Sentinel Admin Control Center (http://localhost:1947/_int_/checkin.html) and click on “Select File…”, then browse to the .v2c file you saved in Step 1.

Click “Apply File”.
If anything goes wrong, see the Possible Errors section below.
Possible Errors¶
If the update fails, in most cases you will need to provide us with the error message you received for a resolution.
However, there are some errors that you might be able to resolve on your end. The table below lists the error message given by ADAM Licence Editor in the first column and the Admin Control Center in the second column.
ADAM Licence Editor Message |
Admin Control Center Message |
Explanation |
---|---|---|
Update was already installed |
HASP_UPDATE_TOO_OLD Trying to install a V2C or V2CP file with an update counter that is out of sequence with update counter in the Sentinel protection key. Values of update counter in file are lower than those in Sentinel protection key. |
As the message suggests, this means that the update was already applied to your dongle. If it’s the latest update that we have sent you then you don’t need to do anything – the dongle is ready for use! However, if you mistakenly tried to re-apply an earlier update then simply try again with the latest one we sent. If it is the latest one we sent, then generate a new C2V file and send it to us. |
Key with specified ID was not found |
HASP_KEYID_NOT_FOUND Sentinel protection key not found |
This either means that the C2V file you tried to apply was for a different dongle to the one currently plugged in to the USB port, or the dongle has failed, or the USB port is faulty. Remove the dongle and esure that the dongle ID engraved on the side matches the number at the beginning of the V2C file’s filename. If so, try plugging the dongle into a different USB port, or try updating it on a different computer. Also verify that the dongle’s light turns on when plugged in. If it does not, this indicates that either the USB port is faulty or the dongle has died. If plugging it in to a different USB port on the same PC or a different PC does not cause the light to appear then contact us for a replacement dongle. |
For all other errors, and for errors above that remain unresolved, the quickest solution will be to generate a new C2V file and send it to us so we can create an update using the current status of the dongle.
